Vintage Kansas City Star Quilt

rae1
This is Rae’s Vintage Kansas City Star quilt which was a block of the month project from the Fat Quarter shop in 2012.   Rae’s only request was that there be no feathers in the outer border so I did a Bead Board design which compliments the feather motif in the light sashing areas.  I made a stencil with a simple loop design to use in the corner stone blocks and framed it with a 1/4” line to match the bead board.  Each block is quilted with a different design using feathers, CC, straight lines, etc.  I stippled all the light background fabrics to compliment the texture of the feathers in the sashing.

It’s hard to capture the quilting on the back in a picture but it really shows up nicely in person!

If you look closely you can see a large pile of snow on the ice, my son and I are building a quinzee.  If you don’t know what a quinzee is check out this link.  We still have to hollow out the inside this weekend.

  5. ooo - Love the colors in this. Building a quinzee looks like a LOT of work! Is your snow easy to work with for this kind of thing? I've notice the snow here doesn't like to become snowmen. Hey, I've been meaning to ask you about something. You've quilted with minky backs a fair bit, right? Do you encounter challenges with the back stretching too much, or the fluff pulling through to the front with the needle, or excessive needle breaks? Do you do anything differently than usual when you quilt those?

  8. As always - beautifully quilted and of course the scenery is to die for. Do all those cracks in the ice come when you walk on the ice? and can you see anything. I guess you have to shovel lots to have it like that. Just Love your quilting!

  12. Just saw a picture of your quilt in the October 11 issue of American Patchwork Quilting and would love to buy the kit for this quilt. I've searched on line, but no luck. Where and how can I purchase this kit?
